Audio Trimmer — Cut and Trim Audio Files Online Free
Audio trimming is one of the most common audio editing tasks: removing silence at the beginning or end of a recording, cutting a long podcast clip to a specific quote, extracting the chorus of a song, or shortening a sound effect for an app. Audio trimming software has traditionally required desktop applications — but modern browsers now support the Web Audio API and client-side audio processing that makes trimming possible directly in a browser with no software installation. Our audio trimmer loads your file locally in the browser, displays a waveform visualization, and allows you to set precise start and end points for trimming. The resulting clip is exported in the same format as the original (or a format of your choice) at the same quality settings. Because processing happens client-side, your audio files are never uploaded to any server — suitable for confidential interviews, protected music, and personal recordings.

Step-by-Step Guide
Upload your audio file
Click the upload area or drag and drop your audio file. Supported formats include MP3, WAV, OGG, FLAC, M4A, and WebM audio. The file loads into the browser's audio processing pipeline — loading time depends on file size. A waveform visualization appears once the audio is decoded, giving you a visual representation of the audio content over time. Large files (over 100 MB) may take 30-60 seconds to load and decode.
Set the start and end trim points
Use the start and end markers on the waveform to define the portion you want to keep. Drag the left marker to set the trim start point — everything before this point is discarded. Drag the right marker to set the trim end point — everything after is discarded. The selected portion (shown highlighted) is what will be exported. Use the playback controls to preview your selection before committing to the trim. Precise time input fields allow you to enter exact timestamps if the waveform markers are hard to position exactly.
Preview the trimmed selection
Click Play in the waveform area to hear only the selected region. This preview uses the browser's Web Audio API to play just the trimmed portion without creating a new file. Listen for any unwanted audio at the beginning or end (pops, breaths, ambient noise) and adjust the markers as needed. For speech recordings, trim to just before the first word and just after the last word, leaving 0.1-0.2 seconds of room on each end to avoid cutting off the audio abruptly.
Export the trimmed file
Click "Export" or "Download" to generate the trimmed audio file. The export creates a new file containing only the selected region. Export time depends on the selection length and format — MP3 encoding takes longer than WAV export because WAV is uncompressed and requires no encoding step. The downloaded file uses the original filename with "_trimmed" appended. The original file on your device is unchanged — trimming creates a new file rather than modifying the original.
Tips & Best Practices
Zoom into the waveform for precise trimming — most audio trimmers support scroll-to-zoom or pinch-to-zoom for sample-accurate editing.
For podcast clips, aim for natural breath pauses as your trim points rather than mid-sentence cuts — cleaner results that don't feel abrupt.
WAV export preserves original quality without re-encoding; MP3 export applies compression which may cause minor quality reduction at the encoding step.
For very long files, trimming a 1-minute clip from a 2-hour podcast is faster than exporting the full 2-hour file — the processing time scales with the export length.
If the waveform is mostly flat (very low audio), the recording may have very low volume — the trim operation still works but consider using our Audio Volume tool afterward to boost the level.
